Good Practice 2 - Adult education on the methodology Step by Step

Two years ago, five teams representing organizations from Italy, Romania and Turkey, exchanged information based on the fact that "we have a common problem: the new category of children with parents working abroad is real one and requires concrete measures, especially regarding the training of persons who are in charge". TATI appeared as a project through the transnational team wished a professional and efficient training for adults, educators, of children in difficulty. The activities follow the ways to find educational practices that obtain the best results in this area. Thus, they collected information were conducted training of teachers, technicians, social workers and specialists to be ready to intervene in every case.

Flanked by project meetings, the activities of our organization started by making a real database on the problems of children with parents working abroad. It was impressive to see children’s lower school performance even if they follow the parents. It was considered appropriate to perform focus groups followed by actions targeted training of trainers TATI. It was also agreed psycho educational techniques that were applied in all organizations. The target groups were adults who are caring for children in need, but according to the concrete conditions of each area, it was used the techniques.

For adults, the applied technique of the "Journal Step by Step" proposed by Valeria Şandru trainer, Teacher Training Center Valcea, believes that the surrounding world is known to every individual personal ways, collaborating and negotiating with others and not through a competitive whose rules are made by adults. Thus, participants are asked to complete a diary of daily events, to think and describe prospective events expected for future weeks, to come. The adult working with children has be done using their empathic qualities. Conclusions are important and, based on positive and negative aspects identified by mutual agreement, parents and children are doing a fiche of measures. The basic tool is effective communication between adult and child, facilitated by trained person in the TATI project.

To increase the efficiency, the adult can use temporal distortion technique where a decision has to be taken, is seen in the past tense. The allocation technique is easily to be explained and approached by adults. Through this, desirable characteristics are assigned to the child (even he/she don’t have such characteristics). The results are visible in future. The technique of charming is an open way to offer concessions. The adult will show the willingness to listen and validate your child's ideas. He/she is free to decide. It is based on empathy, but requires more time to be realized.

A rule is established by two or more persons with the same rights of expression, in agreement. Once established, its violation leads to negative consequences. Related to the child, all adults must follow the rules. Discipline of dialogue and of relationship has to belong to adults and to children, alike.

Children’s initiatives for discovery have to be respected, even those that we know are fruitless, or different from those known (do not stop, do not correct, do not criticize). Positive behavior and effort, even if the result is not the correct or expected have to be appreciate. The child has to be guided without imposing; bans should be clearly explained and justified. Constraints, imposition make the child to feel inferior. 

Finally, but perhaps the most important thing: for adults caring children at risk, it’s recommended to work with teachers / specialists, school counselors to know better the child and do not cause confusion in his/her mind and soul.

Although working style "Journal step by step" seems more tolerant, with the motivating of children for discovery, cultivation of personal responsibility and the ability to decide good informed, between several choices, may occupy a central place in education.

In conclusion, the technique of step by step Journal considers parents as the first teachers of the child, as a part of teaching process. The parent involvement is a natural fact, neither festive nor disruptive.

This communication will reduce conflicting pressures on the child, giving him/her greater freedom in development. The child’s communication with adults becomes easier, he freely expresses becoming more transparent to parents.

     Counseling of adults responsible for the healthy growth of children, is a proper coverage of a large number of beneficiaries. The need is great in our area and, therefore, counseling of adults responsible for the healthy growth of children is already being implemented in schools in Valcea County.

      Depending on the level and psycho educational characteristics of the student, the work objectives are proposed:

• Knowing the student, his behavior, his aptitudes, problems encountered in the absence of parent(s),

• Prevention of school absenteeism,

• Increase motivation for education,

• Prevent harmful entourage and antisocial acts,

• Involvement in school and extracurricular activities,

• Involvement of teachers in developing interpersonal relations and confidence among children.

• Developing independent living skills regarding the responsibilities, communication with people of the same age and with adults.

• keeping the liaise between school, parents or legal guardians left, and with parents abroad.

                For each case can be develop an action plan, as the child need.

 

                    Case Study is a method of direct confrontation of participants with an actual, authentic, taken as a typical representative of a set of problematic situations and events.

                    For a situation, to be considered and analyzed as a "case" representative for children with parents working abroad, it has to have several conditions, namely: to be authentic and meaningful; to be exciting, to motivate the participants to prepare solutions, to require the active participation of all in obtaining solutions assuming the responsibilities of solving the case. The steps are:

  1. Presenting the case and underlining the general aspects.

     b. Understanding the nuances of the case and of the importance of it being solved by the participant. The uncertainties will be established, further questioning will be done from the participants; and additional information will be asked for solving the case.

    c. Individual study of the case: the documentation of the participant; finding and writing down solutions by the participant.

   d. Group debate of possible solutions for the case: analysing the solution variants. For example, in triads and then for all.

   e. For example in triads or for everyone, or directly for everyone, each person will present the suggested solution. The results will be compared together with everybody and analyzed critically via an open debate, mediated by the trainer. You can rank the options proposed.

   f. Formulating the optimal conclusion based on an unanimous decision.

  g. Evaluating how the case-situation was solved.

                    Furthermore, there will be made predictions about the importance of remembering the solution methods in order the apply it in similar situations.

                    The trainer's role, where the case study is confined to the challenging of the approaches to resolve the case.

                    Also, T.A.T.I. brought novelty application technique psycho - educational described in the guide and accepted by all partners.
